Ruddy darter Sympetrum sanguineum

More restricted in distribution than Sympetrum striolatum it is seems to have extended its range in the past decade, particularly in the north of the county. At favoured sites it is very abundant but was affected by the droughts of the 1990s. At Ufton Fields, a stronghold, many of its ponds dried out completely in the summer of 1996, but the populations there and elsewhere in the county have recovered well.
